![]() Shinra’s Mako Reactors are draining the planet’s life force, so Avalanche is on a spree destroying reactors with bombs Jessie builds at the start of the game. This former actor turned bomb-maker works with party members Barret and Tifa as part of Avalanche, an eco-terrorist group that seeks to undermine the Shinra Energy Corporation. Jessie first appears as a wholesome pile of pixels with boob armor in the original. And it does this by giving Jessie, like everyone else, a really intense glow-up. Can you tell who's who? Square EnixįF7 Remake transforms a classic Japanese role-playing game with polygonal character models into a modern-day thirst trap. 'FF7' Jessie and 'FF7 Remake' Jessie standing on a staircase in Shinra tower. Even though my heart ached when Jessie disappeared in the back-half of the game, and my heart broke after her inevitable death, I still had a spectacular time on this horny adventure. It is a dream come true that was made for me and me alone. Yet it is a very real video game expertly made by the professionals. (“Oh, dearest, I suspect we’ll have ourselves a most exciting time together, you and I!”) But 2020’s biggest flirt in gaming is without question Jessie.Īt times, FF7 Remake feels like a smutty fanfiction I might’ve written in my teenage years to work through these feelings. The goddess Aphrodite is downright thirsty in Hades, tantalizing Zagreus from atop Mount Olympus. Other characters in gaming this year - like Dina from The Last of Us Part II- come off as flirty and fun-loving in a very human way. But for Jessie to become a leading lady and this year’s biggest flirt in Final Fantasy VII Remake makes my head spin. Why do I adore a mostly neutral side character who dies very early in the story? I may never know. I’ve struggled my entire adult life to reckon with that infatuation. Square Enix did a fantastic job turning a once side character into a character people care about.I’ve had a crush on Jessie Rasberry from Final Fantasy VII for more than 20 years. Her flirty personality and emotional conundrums helped serve to naturally progress the story and create higher stakes for Cloud and the group. At first, she seeks to shift the blame towards something else, but comes to accept the guilt and changes her actions as a result.Ĭompared to the original Final Fantasy VII, Jessie has left a lasting impression on all players. Her original intentions were to stop Shinra from harming the planet, but her actions ended up hurting unintended civilians. This emotional thought process is much more developed in the Remake and serves to humanize Jessie more. Jessie used more explosive material than needed in the first bomb and expresses regret over it, vowing to use less explosive in the next bomb. She chalks up the massive explosion to some reaction with the Mako, but eventually admits that it was her fault. ![]() In Remake, Jessie is haunted by the destruction she has caused. In the original, she notes that the explosion is bigger than it should've been, but that's really all there is to it. Without Jessie's influence, Cloud's outlook on others likely would've remained aloof.Īnother aspect of Jessie that is expanded upon is her reaction to the explosion at the first Mako Reactor. ![]() Their relationship becomes close enough to the point where Cloud expresses genuine grief over Jessie's death on the Sector 7 pillar, epitomized by how he doesn't allow Jessie's hand to fall. Jessie calls out Cloud when he first smiles at Wedge's burnt underwear, signaling Cloud's warmth towards the group. However, as he continues to interact with the cast, especially Jessie, his cold personality gradually beings to thaw. At first, Cloud appears as a stoic and distant "member" of Avalanche. While this is played for laughs at the beginning, her playful banter with Cloud helps naturally progress his character development. It's obvious right from the get-go that Jessie is interested in Cloud, and it becomes less and less subtle as the game continues. It's much easier to build an attachment to Jessie because of her interactions with characters and reactions to events. It also makes the eventual departure much more painful. All these aspects serve to better establish an emotional attachment with the player and Jessie. In Remake, Jessie is more fleshed out as a character, having a vibrant personality, a backstory and an actual motive for joining Avalanche. In the original game, that's the majority of her character, though she does express remorse over Avalanche's role in the destruction caused to the Sectors. In both versions of the game, Jessie is the technical expert of Avalanche, providing the group hacking expertise and explosives for the group.
